History of Maybe Great

As many projects do, Maybe Great came out of personal interests:

I have always been an overly curious and creative individual. My attention growing up has been consumed entirely: disassembling every gadget, hacking around the limitations of old computers, being fascinated by video games, future and the concept of time, escaping to imagined worlds of books, tv shows and movies, and when I asked for more making my own.

Back in 2012 I have started the work on beautifully misspelled project Barbeqoo.

Let's have the painter converse with the musician and the video game dev chat with a woodworker. Let's bring everyone into a backyard and have, as Australian would put it, a good ol' Sunday Barbie.

The core thought was that genius breakthroughs and exceptional creativity often arise from the intersection of different fields of knowledge and expertise. While I have failed to do anything with the project for many years it gave birth to the name Maybe Great in 2017, when I registered the domain.

As the name implies maybe this or that can become great, maybe an individual can strive to become great. It was aspirational and stuck with me. (The alternative version is that just a reference to Arrested Development's Maeby Fünke.)

Maybe Great gives into the chance of probability. Like gambling can bring about the worst and the best moments of our lives. Like the word 'love', 'shit', and 'fuck' can translate to many things based on the context. Like quantum mechanics and string theory turn science into magic.

In 2025 Maybe Great is a Network of Curious and Hopeful Creators. My personal values, were reframed as Founding Principles to give those who are looking for a guideline something to lean on. I personally reach out and meet many creators asking to them share their stories, to motivate others to join our rebellion.
