What is Maybe Great
Maybe Great joins creators regardless of their medium or skillsets to talk and apply curiosity and morality to dreams and reality.
We are a creator collective, peer network and a museum to hope.
Our effort takes shape of digital and physical products: essays, games and programs, paintings, movies, books, movements, performances, and shows.
Our manifesto is the guideline left open to interpretation. Below is my take which should provide clarity to the poetry:
Hope is dead.
Distorted by the pursuit of comfort and consumption.
Misunderstood as simple acts of kindness.
Buried beneath the dreams of the past.
Hope was the American Dream. Hope was the promise of ownership and family delivering happiness. Hope died when happiness was made the center piece to our existence. Hope died when extending a helping hand came with a price tag.
Good.
Keep the old hope dead!
Let’s create a new hope.
Our hope should be a positively charged ideal of what you and I can become. Maybe it's just becoming one with Nature. Or it's an eternal life, infinite pleasure, and exploration of the unknown. Utopia is being unburden by access to basic needs and wants, giving me the freedom to search for a deeper meaning of life. Being hopeful is that this utopia can turn from an ideal to a reality.
A hope made by creators who write, code, lead, paint, sculpt, perform, and care.
By the curious who ask what and why of the humankind.
By the courageous who rush in without a backup plan.
Creators come in all shapes and forms, with and without talents. Ask all those who create why do they. They will say curiosity. They will say challenge. Ask them why again. They will say because I can, and because I must.
Times are diverse which makes us separate and categorize more than ever. The unnecessary separation removes funny from the serious. Separates the personal from the professional. Art from business. It's the reason the writing here is poetic yet tangible. I believe the yin and yang of life should be balanced across all its facets, not within a million tiny cubicles. When faced with life or death situation, as I say in my personal values: "Laugh into the face of the death."
You’re one of us if you wake up with wild ideas and make them real.
If you challenge the status quo without malice.
If you believe in utopia for those after us.
Join us as an observer and a contributor.
It is easy to just assume and theorize. I strive to validate what I preach through practical application and audience participation. Morality must be an open discussion to become a cornerstone of forward thinking movements, otherwise things can go awry quickly. Challenging any norms is a rebellion. Rebels need to be opportunistic and self-righteous, but that does't mean they have to seek violence.
Great dreamers must be great pragmatics. I point this out because for all the Rick Rubin-ness the usual day to day of Maybe Great respects reality of how life functions. Hands need to be shook, deal made and egos stroke. Meaningful change is expected to be slow and not meant for us to enjoy, often not even for our children or theirs.
If this speaks to you through my words, or through your own I invite you to join below. Go through our published media and products to get a sense for the kind of work we do. Join to observe or better to contribute towards the hopeful future.
Our network is open, non-elitist, free but participatory.
