First Times
Please remember the joy of your first times. As we age there’s less opportunities to live through new first times and I ask “is the excitement gone because of it?”
I was on a date with a fresh 29-old woman, who raved and took hard drugs for the very first time the weekend prior. I have done the same exact thing at her age and felt almost jealous. I implored her through an advice, “savor the moment, it never kicks as good, afterwards.” Like the first love, you get it once and chase the same high for the remainder of your life. It never comes.
As we age we turn to the second best - experience the joy of others. The first kiss on the stairs of a closed bar, running after the puppy when it feels the grass below its paws, or listening to that one record. Ultimately when watching strangers or family isn’t enough I'm reminded why people have kids - to selfishly relive the first times through the substitute copy of their own.
